Rare Baseball Cards Spark Excitement at Heritage Auctions

Heritage Auctions is rolling out the red carpet for sports card collectors with their upcoming Summer Sports Card Catalog Auction. Set to take place on July 12-13, this event promises a treasure trove of rare and highly sought-after baseball cards that will make any collector’s heart skip a beat.

Among the star attractions is a mint-condition 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson card, a gem-mint Michael Jordan Fleer rookie card, and a gem-mint chrome rookie card autographed by a young Bryce Harper. These cards represent a glimpse into sports history and hold immense value for enthusiasts and investors alike.

The auction also boasts sealed packs, boxes, and cases that are bursting with potential hidden gems waiting to be uncovered. Signed Shohei Ohtani cards and best-of-the-best Ty Cobb tobacco cards add to the allure of this summer auction, which features a plethora of Hall of Fame treasures, including a jersey worn by the legendary Babe Ruth during his iconic “Called Shot.”

A standout highlight of the event is a collection of 1959 baseball cards that were once stapled to containers of Canadian cookies. These cards, so rare that only 69 are listed in the PSA population report, feature 37 cards showcasing legendary players like Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, and Yogi Berra. The cards, originally produced by Exhibits Supply Company as promotional items for Dad’s Cookies, have become a coveted treasure in the world of sports memorabilia.

Joe Orlando, Heritage’s Executive Vice President in Sports, emphasizes the significance of these Dad’s Cookies cards, noting that they excite even the most seasoned collectors due to their rarity and historical value. The cards, featuring a playful note from the company’s mascot “Sandy,” are a testament to the nostalgia and charm of vintage sports collectibles.

In addition to the Dad’s Cookies cards, the auction showcases two of the most coveted Ty Cobb T206 cards from the early 1900s. The El Principe de Gales Ty Cobb, graded PSA NM 7, is a rare find with only one known example bearing the El Principe de Gales advertisement on the back. The American Beauty Portrait-Red Cobb, graded PSA EX-MT 6, is the finest known example of its kind, further adding to its allure for serious collectors.

For those seeking a trip down memory lane, the auction offers sealed boxes and cases like the 1970 Topps Baseball Wax Box and the 2015 Upper Deck Hockey Series 1 Hobby Unopened Case. These items hold the promise of discovering iconic cards from baseball, hockey, and football history, making them a nostalgic and exciting addition to any collection.

The Summer Sports Card Catalog Auction at Heritage Auctions is not just a sale; it’s a celebration of sports memorabilia and the thrill of the hunt for rare and valuable cards. With a lineup that includes iconic players, hidden treasures, and the potential for unforgettable discoveries, this auction is a must-see event for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
