USC Grad’s Double Rare Topps Debut Patch Card Triumph

Alec Word, a recent graduate from the University of Southern California, had more than just academic success to celebrate in December. Stepping into the world of sports card collecting, Alec found himself at the center of an extraordinary streak of luck that would leave any hobbyist green with envy.

After earning his degree in Business Administration and Finance, Alec made his way to Jaspy’s Sports Cards & Collectibles on December 7th. Little did he know that his visit would mark the beginning of a series of incredible discoveries. While opening packs of the 2024 Topps Update Jumbo in-store, Alec stumbled upon a true gem: the 1/1 MLB Debut Patch autograph redemption card for Baltimore Orioles’ All-Star, Jordan Westburg.

Initially taken aback by the card, Alec’s realization was solidified when the shop erupted in excitement. Co-owner Maren Jaspersen recalled the moment, expressing their thrill for Alec. The MLB Debut Patch autograph cards, known for their uniqueness and rarity, are highly sought after in the collecting world, with each card featuring a patch from a player’s MLB debut jersey along with their autograph.

Alec’s success was even more remarkable considering that a significant portion of the 2024 Topps Debut Patch cards had already been claimed by collectors at the time of his find. But Alec’s luck didn’t end there.

Returning to Jaspy’s on December 10th, Alec acquired Breaker’s Delight boxes known for their increased odds of low-numbered cards. Opening the boxes at home while on FaceTime with friends, Alec experienced yet another stroke of luck – pulling the live MLB Debut Patch autograph card for Jose Ferrer.

Overwhelmed by his double triumph, Alec shared his disbelief and elation at his incredible finds. His journey back into collecting began as a way to bond with his brother during the pandemic, and it has now turned into a thrilling hobby filled with unexpected wins.

While Alec has already parted ways with the Westburg card, selling it to an Orioles supercollector, he intends to preserve the Ferrer card as a precious addition to his personal collection. Maren from Jaspy’s encapsulated the sentiment perfectly, emphasizing Alec’s exceptional luck and the sheer excitement that the hobby brings to collectors.

With a degree from USC’s esteemed Marshall School of Business and a profound love for sports, Alec aspires to merge his passion with his professional ambitions in the sports industry. Whether hitting the jackpot in the card world or pursuing his career goals, Alec’s December will undoubtedly go down as a month to remember.
